Unit 1.B Vocabulary List

Matter- anything that occupies space and has mass.
Physical properties- properties that can be observed and measured without changing the chemical make-up of the substance.
Density- the mass of the material within a given volume.
Freezing point- the temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid; same value as its melting point; 0°C.
Aqueous solution- a water based solution.
Surface tension- The tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer, which tends to minimize surface area.
Boiling point- the temperature at which a liquid boils at normal atmospheric pressure; 100°C.
Suspension- When solid particles are large enough to settle out or can be separated by using filtration.
Mixture- when 2 or more substances combine, yet they retain their individual properties.
Heterogeneous mixture- the composition is not uniform throughout.
Tyndall effect- the scattering of light indicating that solid particles are in the substance.
Colloid- a mixture containing solid particles that are not large enough to remain suspended or settle out.
Homogeneous mixture- uniform throughout.
Solution- a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
Solute- the dissolved substance.
Solvent- the dissolving agent.
Particulate level- level of atoms and molecules.
Atoms- the building blocks of matter.
Element- matter that is made up of only one kind of atom.
Compound- a substance that is composed of the atoms of 2 or more elements linked together chemically in certain fixed proportions.
Chemical formula- a symbolic expression representing the elements contained in a substance, together with subscripts that indicate the relative numbers of atoms of each element.
Substance- a material with a uniform, definite composition and distinct properties.
Molecule- the smallest unit of a molecular compound that retains the properties of that substance.
Molecular compound- a compound made of two or more non-metal elements.
